Raiden at Christmas 2011

Horizon Tumblen's Thunder God, CGC "Raiden"

Raiden is my first boxer. He came to me on Saturday, Dec. 20th, 2003 at just 10 weeks old. Raiden has the sweetest temperament of any dog I've ever known. He's never met a person or dog he didn't like. I call him Mr. Man since he's the only male dog I've had in many years. At 3 years and 5 months old, he started to show the first white hairs on his muzzle. He loves to go anywhere whether it be a walk around the neighborhood or a trip to PetsMart. Raiden took his first obedience class in April 2007 and received his CGC title on June 24th, 2007.

Health Testing

Health Testing

  • Cardiac auscultation on September 11, 2004 by Dr. Larry Tilley, DVM. Auscultation was within normal limits. Congenital heart disease is not evident.
  • Raiden was neutered in June 2008, so we have not completed any other health testing at this time.

Health Notes

Raiden at 5 months old
  • Suspected brain tumor & renal failure in 2011:
    • May/June 2011, Raiden started showing increasing signs of loosing his balance and had a head tilt. A brain tumor was suspected, but nothing was found via CBC Blood Panel, urinalysis or ultrasound. Antibiotics were started incase he had an inner ear infection. They seemed to have no effect. Prenisone was started to reduce swelling around a suspected brain stem tumor. It too did nothing and we reduced the dose until it was low enough to take him off of it.
    • July 2011, CBC Blood Panel showed BUN (Urea Nitrogen), CREA (Creatinine), ALB (Albumin) were all off. Urinalysis and urine protein level showed his kidneys were no longer fully functioning. Balance issues continued and seemed to be worsening. Raiden was put on Enalapril, 1/2 low dose aspirin, 3000 mg fish oil per day and egg whites to increase protein without unsetting his stomach.
    • August 2011, CBC blood panel values were worse and urine protein level was 11 mg/dl showing us he had severe kidney disease (stage 4 according to IRIS Guidelines http://www.iris-kidney.com/pdf/IRIS%20A4%20Poster.pdf).
    • September 2011, Raiden's balance issues went away. We do not know what caused these symptoms. Raiden's CBC values were a little bit better, but still very off.
    • October 2011, we started Raiden on a 100% raw prey-model diet consisting mostly of chicken and turkey raw meaty bones and ground beef along with B-Naturals' Digestive Blend and Immuno-DMG.
    • Raiden is still very active and happy. He sleeps as much as I expect any eight year old dog to sleep, but otherwise now seems quite normal other than being prone to GI issues.
    • December 2011, Raiden's CBC blood panel was rechecked and completely normal. His urine protein level is now down to 4.7 mg/dl from 11 mg/dl. This means he is still way above normal and he still has stage 3 renal failure according to IRIS Guidelines (http://www.iris-kidney.com/pdf/IRIS%20A4%20Poster.pdf).
  • On Sept. 30, 2010, Raiden had to have his gums cut back because they had grown over his teeth. A part of his gums looked suspicious and needed to be biopsied. He was diagnosed with a benign tumor. Both the tumor and the overgrown gums may return in the future.
  • In June 2008, Raiden had a large benign tumor removed from his side leaving a large vertical surgical scar below his withers.
  • In September 2004, Raiden was diagnosed with benign tumors on the outside of both his rear feet at only 11 months of age.
