Maya from Richmond Boxer Rescue

Maya

  • Born: Sometime around 2000 - June 23, 2010
  • Sire: Unknown
  • Dam: Unknown

Maya was our rescue dog. She originally came to us as a foster from Richmond Boxer Rescue in November 2008. She had several growths/tumors on her and was severely emaciated when she was picked up as a stray by the local county animal shelter. She was also heartworm positive and unspayed. When Maya was diagnosed with Boxer Cardiomyopathy in January 2009, we decided to adopt her ourselves.

After Maya was with us for about a month and began gaining weight, we started to see her personality come out. She started showing us that she was really a very happy girl who loved to run around with the other dogs and loved all people. Maya loved to give kisses and very quickly realized that we were her people. She would try to hop up and down, but only her front feet ever left the ground. This became her usual way of showing us she was happy or excited.

Maya gained lots of weight, was spayed and had one benign tumor removed. She was also treated for heartworms after a 24-hour holter monitor showed it should be safe despite your BCM. Maya had limited rang-of-motion in her right hind leg, but that didn't slow her down any. She loved following the younger dogs around the yard and would not go outside without them, but you couldn't keep her inside as long as her friends were with her.

On June 23, 2010, Maya collapsed from what was believed to be ventricular arrhythmia. She had recently recovered from an episode of bloat and surgery to suture her stomach in place, but it was just too much for her weakened heart. She is deeply missed.
